We are excited to be able to confirm that further archaeological work is now taking place on site! This is on the east side of the raised area of the site where we suspect the remains of the eastern curtain wall of the Castle would have been/are. A large, wide trench has been excavated by Wessex stretching from the dilapidated building on the top of the site, south towards the gatehouse area.
This work is taking place to help the Council design team with their plans to put a route-way through the site, somewhat complicated by some of the finds in the earlier excavation. We remain in dialogue with the Council on this and of course our expectation is that as much of the Castle remains found will be preserved and on display for all to see.
The Council have appointed a Conservation Architect to help with the long term protection of the remains and we are due to meet with them, Historic England and the Council shortly to discuss their thoughts on this.
